Prabowo Envisions Merah Putih Village Cooperatives: Middlemen and Loan Sharks Beware

President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, recently launched the Merah Putih Village Cooperative Program to not only strengthen economic independence but also to eradicate exploitative practices in rural areas. During the inauguration in Bentangan Village, Klaten Regency, Central Java, President Prabowo highlighted the chronic issues faced by farmers, such as the lack of transportation and storage facilities leading to post-harvest losses. He also addressed the challenge of subsidized fertilizer not reaching farmers due to bureaucratic hurdles. Furthermore, he emphasized the exploitation by middlemen and loan sharks, pushing farmers into borrowing money at high interest rates for daily needs and struggling to sell their produce at fair prices. The President sees the Merah Putih Village Cooperatives as a transformative solution to end this cycle of exploitation and bring economic empowerment to rural communities in Indonesia.
