Dari Apem Cakes hingga Es Doger: Small Vendors Taste Freedom

Independence Day celebration in Indonesia this year took on a special meaning under President Prabowo Subianto. The State Palace invited 60 small business vendors to participate, with all their products purchased by the palace to serve to guests, 80 percent of whom were members of the public. Street vendors like Wahyu, who sells traditional kue apem cakes, expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to participate. Another vendor, selling es doger, was overjoyed to step inside the State Palace for the first time. This year, the Palace extended a special gesture by inviting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to serve 30,000 portions of food and drinks free of charge to the public at key locations around the Palace. Visitors were thrilled to experience the State Palace up close, with one attendee sharing his excitement on Instagram. The event showcased the Palace’s new openness under President Prabowo, where officials, ordinary citizens, and small street vendors came together in a shared space of unity.
