Mercedes Formula 1 team is in talks to purchase a stake in the Alpine team, as confirmed by Flavio Briatore. The potential transaction, involving Mercedes directly rather than just Toto Wolff, has been acknowledged by the Alpine team boss during a press conference at the Chinese Grand Prix. The German brand is eyeing a 24% stake in the Enstone-based team, currently owned by investment group Otro Capital, which includes prominent figures like Ryan Reynolds and Rory McIlroy. The Alpine outfit’s value has surged to $3 billion, more than double its initial value when Otro bought the shares for $233 million in 2023. Several potential buyers are in the running for the shares, with former Red Bull principal Christian Horner among them. Briatore clarified that he is not considering purchasing the shares himself but is observing the negotiation process. The switch to a Mercedes engine for the 2026 season was a strategic move demanded by Briatore to rejoin Alpine and has no plans for Mercedes to influence Alpine’s operations. Audi team principal Jonathan Wheatley sees no conflict of interest in the deal and is excited about the potential transaction, as indicated by Briatore’s amusement at enjoying some popcorn while watching the situation unfold.
