Chris Rice is currently facing a dilemma regarding the issue of granting waivers for Truck Series drivers who have missed races to qualify for the Chase for the Championship. As the president of Kaulig Racing, he has requested a waiver to make Corey Lajoie eligible for the 10-driver championship. The inner conflict arose when he was questioned on SiriusXM’s The Morning Drive about the possibility of Tricon Garage’s Corey Heim also seeking a waiver, as Heim is leading the standings despite missing two races and not being championship eligible. Rice jokingly mentioned that asking for one for Lajoie might complicate matters if he says no to Heim.
The situation is complex because if Heim becomes championship eligible, it would make it more challenging for Lajoie to secure a spot in the top-10 by the end of the regular season. Heim’s case is more straightforward as he missed two races but chose to receive Truck points at the beginning of the season, even though he did not intend to compete for the championship. On the other hand, Lajoie opted to receive Cup Series points at the start of the season by racing in the Daytona 500 for RFK Racing.
Despite two previous Truck Series starts at Daytona and Atlanta while registered for Cup Series points, NASCAR declined Rice’s request to retroactively include those points in Lajoie’s total. Now, with Lajoie set to race the No. 10 truck for the rest of the season after taking over from Daniel Dye, Rice is hoping for a chance for Lajoie to break into the top-10. Currently, Lajoie is 84 points behind with 13 races remaining.
Initially, Rice believed that drivers needed to commit to the series to accumulate points. However, producer Sam Agee argued that if a driver earned enough points to qualify for the Chase for the Championship, it should be based on merit and not require a waiver. This difference in opinion highlights the changes in the championship format where points are earned throughout the year.
