Sharing makeup products with close friends is a common practice, but it can pose health risks without realizing it. Cosmetic products can be a medium for transferring bacteria, viruses, and fungi from one person to another, leading to various issues like acne, eye infections, and lip injuries.
According to various sources, products like mascara, eyeliner, and cream eyeshadows should be used personally and not shared. These products are at high risk when used interchangeably as the eye area is sensitive and prone to infection. Conditions like red eyes (conjunctivitis), sty, and warts around the eyes can arise from sharing eye makeup.
Another product to be cautious about sharing is powder-based makeup like blush. Although the risk of contamination is lower compared to liquid products, powder makeup can still be contaminated with facial oils and bacteria, worsening existing acne or causing new breakouts. It is essential to sanitize the product before sharing and avoid repeated application to prevent contamination.
Open-container cosmetics like face creams or makeup in jars are also prone to contamination when shared. Fingers carrying bacteria from multiple people can introduce germs into the product, which can be absorbed into the skin, potentially causing skin issues.
Similarly, products for the lips like lipstick, lip gloss, and lip balm pose a high risk when shared due to direct contact with the skin and saliva. Lip products can harbor viruses like Herpes Simplex, which can remain dormant on lipstick surfaces. Also, moist lip products can be breeding grounds for bacteria, especially when the applicator is repeatedly inserted into the tube.
Makeup brushes and sponges should also not be shared as they can transfer bacteria, including staphylococcus, which can cause serious infections if left untreated. These tools, when used on acne-prone or injured skin, can harbor bacteria and transmit them to others. Proper cleaning of makeup tools is crucial to prevent the build-up of bacteria and ensure safe usage.
