Ferrari Formula 1 team principal Fred Vasseur elaborated on the decision not to pit Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton under the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) during the Australian Grand Prix. Despite a lightning start that put Leclerc in the lead, both Ferraris opted to stay out when the VSC was triggered due to Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull breaking down. This allowed Mercedes to pit for fresh tires, prompting Hamilton to question the strategy over team radio. Bottas’ retirement on lap 16 led to more pit stops by other cars, but the pitlane entry was closed due to a car on track, further impacting the race. Leclerc eventually pitted on lap 25, followed by Hamilton on lap 28. Speaking after the race, Vasseur acknowledged Mercedes’ better pace and strategic advantage, leading to their 1-2 finish. He noted that despite finishing third and fourth, Ferrari had no regrets over their strategy, emphasizing the need to focus on upcoming races.
