Nicolo Bulega, the current leader of the World Superbike Championship, may have to wait longer for his move to MotoGP, with uncertainties arising for a potential shift in 2027. This uncertainty is primarily due to the significant technical changes expected in MotoGP next year, with new regulations mandating 850cc engines, reduced aerodynamics, a ban on ride-height devices, and a switch to Pirelli tires. Ducati had appointed Bulega as a test rider for its 850cc prototype to leverage his experience with Pirelli tires from the WSBK series. While the actual MotoGP tires may differ, his familiarity with the manufacturer was viewed as an advantage.
The anticipation of Bulega’s advancement to the premier class was fueled further by Ducati’s decision to field him as a substitute for Marc Marquez in the last two races of the previous season and in the post-season Valencia test. Despite finishing 15th in both Portimao and Valencia races, Bulega demonstrated progress during the test, narrowing the gap with Ducati’s regular riders. However, the dynamics of the rider market have apparently led to Bulega being out of contention for a Ducati seat as most of the slots for the 2027 Desmosedici GP lineup are nearly filled.
It has been suggested that the lack of space for Bulega has been acknowledged by his manager, with no concrete offer currently on the table. Despite the uncertainties, Bulega’s focus remains on his dream of competing in MotoGP, reflecting his determination to pursue that goal with available opportunities. The road ahead may be uncertain, but Bulega and his team are ready to seize any possible openings while keeping his MotoGP aspirations alive.
